During an upper eyelid blepharoplasty, an incision is made the crease of the eyelid, through which excess fat can be removed, muscles can be tightened, and loose skin can be removed, leaving the eyelid appropriately tight and even.

For a lower eyelid blepharoplasty, the incision can be made just below the lower lash line, through which fat and excess skin can be taken. Alternately, an incision can be made on the inside of the eyelid, known as a transconjunctival incision. Please note that only fat be removed if you opt for this route, and no skin can be taken. The decision on which option to choose will be based on what your surgeon deems as being needed, as well as cosmetic outcomes.

Candidates for Blepharoplasty

A lower eyelid blepharoplasty using the lower lash line incision placement might result in a slightly more visible scar, but our surgeons will use many techniques and recommend post-surgical healing regimes to minimize this. A transconjunctival incision will be invisible, as the incision is made on the inside of the eyelid.

For both of these types of blepharoplasty, you can expect a smoother, tighter, more youthful eye shape once the swelling has gone down.

Preparing for a Blepharoplasty

Prior to having your blepharoplasty done, you will need to have a consultation with one of our skilled surgeons to figure out the best type of blepharoplasty for your concerns. At this time, the surgeon will discuss with you what outcomes you can expect to achieve from the procedure.

As with any surgical procedure, it is advisable to quit smoking at least one month beforehand to improve healing. Eat well, stay hydrated and exercise to promote good blood flow and skin health. Make sure to discuss any medications or supplements you are taking with your surgeon.

Blepharoplasty recovery process

After your blepharoplasty, it is normal for there to be swelling and bruising. We recommend use of ice packs to reduce swelling. It’s also a good idea to sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling further.

While you should avoid any strenuous exercise for at least a week after your procedure, gentle walking is a great way to promote healing.

We will likely provide you with antibiotic ointment and eye drops to prevent infection and irritation in the eye area. You should also wear sunglasses as your eyes will be sensitive to sun, wind, and dust for around 2 weeks afterwards.

Overall, you can expect to return to normal functioning about 10 days after your blepharoplasty if your surgeon has cleared you to do so.
